Met Gala punk fashion flops

Lauded as Tinseltown’s most fashionable night of the year, the Met Gala kicked off in New York City on Tuesday – with mixed results.

Hosted by Vogue, the gala is an annual event which celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fashion exhibition.

The official theme of this year’s exhibit was ‘Punk: Chaos to Couture’, and the high profile guest list was expected to dress accordingly.

While some celebrities nailed the punk look, it seemed others took ‘chaos’ too literally, as the list of worst dressed highly outweighed the best.

This year, Anna Wintour finally let Kim Kardashian on to the Met Gala red carpet, (obviously cutting the pregnant star some slack) – yet a catastrophe occurred.

A custom-made Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy floral dress certainly got people talking about Kim, but for all the wrong reasons.

When she made the decision to wear matching floral gloves, all bets were off.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Tisci explained that Kim put herself in the designer’s hands.

“Kim told me ‘Ricky, I love what you’re doing so much, I am in your hands’,” Tisci said.

“People can say what they want.

“To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world, and when you celebrate something, you give people flowers.”

Unfortunately Kim wasn’t the only red carpet star who picked an unforgiving look.

Features writer and sub-editor for Shop Til You Drop magazine, Ellie Packer chose Katy Perry as her worst dressed star of the night.

“Typically after every Met Gala, us girls in the Shop office rummage through the photos of the good and bad red carpet looks, and this year Katy Perry took the cake as our least favourite costume,” Ms Packer said.

“She chose to wear a Dolce & Gabbana dress that seemed to be confused by the theme –  being more baroque than punk.

“We didn’t quite understand the explanation she gave Vogue for her outfit about ‘channelling the original queen of punk, Joan of Arc’.”

The Material Girl herself, Madonna, flaunted her bum and boobs in a 70s-inspired jacket, studded leather gloves and a ripped fishnet body stocking, placing her as another one of the worst dressed stars on the red carpet.

Director and editor of fashion blog Loved Up Closet, Sarah Stokes, says Madonna’s outfit choice was shocking.

“She has made a career out of shocking people, and she did exactly that at this year’s Met Gala,”  Ms Stokes said.

“Whilst dressing quite appropriately to the ‘punk’ segment of the theme, dripping in chains and with a padlock around her neck certainly doesn’t scream ‘couture’.

“I am so interested to know what happened when Madonna spoke to Anna Wintour without wearing any pants!”

However  there were some who shined on the red carpet, including Nicole Richie, Rooney Mara and Sarah Jessica Parker (just to name a few).

Punk isn’t dead – but some of those outfits need to be put to rest.
